As we move towards the COP 15 United Nations Climate Change conference in December 2009, more and more momentum and public engagement will be growing around global warming.
Several international environmental NGOs are at work at the moment to raise awareness on climate change, engage global citizens in order to make COP 15 not just a climate change summit, but a referendum on our collective future, so that when the delegates will gather in Copenhagen, they will feel the urge of the people to act and make progress on the climate change front.
Even if a not that recent (from September 2008), the ‘Polar Bear’ viral video below does a great job at raising awareness, and encouraging Americans to ‘ride, not drive’ (which means using as much public transportation as possible). It was part of a series of TV spots and viral videos created for the Environmental Defense Fund’s Fight Global Warming campaign.
What I really like about this campaign is that it leverages the creative and ‘emotional/inspirational’ work of a New York City artist – Joshua Allen Harris – to educate people and encourage positive change & action through arts. Really Cool.
The Polar Bear videos have received over 70,000 views on You Tube and in the one month that they ran on the SeeSaw network. They have also run as broadcast TV spots on major networks.
Recently they won a Sliver One Show Pencil in the non-broadcast category and 2 National Addys in the Interactive Media and Public Service/Broadcast/Interactive categories. The videos
PS: If every American car owner drove 10 fewer miles per week, we would be able to prevent the same amount of global warming-carbon dioxide pollution that is emitted by producing electricity for 8 million homes!
